Spread The Word To End The Word

Published on March 3, 2010 by in Advocacy, Down Syndrome

Today is March 3.  It is National End the R-Word Day, a time for us to stop and reflect on how our own speech affects those around us.

Please take some time today to join the over 80,000 individuals who have pledged to eliminate the r-word from their everyday conversations.  You can take the pledge at R-Word.Org!

If you use the word “retard” or any variation of, no matter HOW you “mean” it.  You suck.  Ok, you don’t suck, but you’re insensitive to how hurtful it is to those around you.  Those who have to fight to be heard.  Those who have to fight to be seen as an equal.  And those of us who love them.  Those of us who fight along side them.

Take a moment and think before you speak.  It’s as easy as that!  Click on the button below to add your name to the petition to Spread The Word To End The Word!

I have heard the R word so many times since originally reading your post. My ears have begun to hear it and it's alarming how often it is used. Like "faggot" or "nigger," people throw it around freely. Thanks for your efforts to end this kind of mindless cruel speech.

So I posted on my brother's facebook wall, telling him not to use it, calling him out basically. All three of his siblings work at a special needs summer camp. and what did he do? delete the comment, restrict my ability to write on his wall, and post on mine telling me to keep my political correctness to a facebook message, or to myself.

Charming. (sorry. this just happened and I needed to rant. he's 28. GROW UP!!)

I am so against the R word I will shout it from the roof-tops for all to hear. I am totally buying into this campaign. I'm going to the website now:)
